Britain Mourns Queen Elizabeth II: Latest Updates

King Charles III Leads Commemorations for Queen Elizabeth II

Events to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II are continuing across the U.K. this week, after King Charles III was proclaimed monarch at a ceremony in London over the weekend.

King Charles III visited Parliament on Monday, where he made his first address there as monarch and lawmakers expressed their condolences for the death of his mother, before flying with the queen consort to Edinburgh.

In the Scottish capital, the king led a royal procession of the queen’s coffin from Holyroodhouse, the British monarch’s official Scottish residence, to St. Giles’ Cathedral. Thousands are lining up to see the coffin inside the cathedral. The coffin is set to be flown to London on Tuesday. The queen’s funeral is set for Sept. 19.

The decision to beam the images of the king speaking at the accession council at St James’s Palace on Saturday was part of a wider plan to usher in a more visible, informal and nimble monarchy, according to palace officials.
